Keeping It Simple

I'm going to start off with a confession of sorts- in high school I was the year book editor- two years running- I loved it- feel free to mock me if you wish- as I know my sister surly will- but straight up I loved everything about that job. It was in the course of those two years that I learned one of life's greatest lessons- K.I.S.S.- or Keep It Simple Stupid- I have carried this little acronym through to my adult life and I find it can be applied to almost any situation. Buying a stereo- keep it simple. What to wear on my wedding day- keep it simple. Organizing my family- keep it simple.

We are now on the brink of September- things are about to get super busy around here- and by super busy I mean for us- other families will look at our schedule and laugh at it's pettiness! Starting next week we have two kids in two different schools in two different ends of the city- it is going to take some serious time management on my behalf so no one gets left behind! We have intentionally left September free of all extra curricular activities like soccer and ballet- there will be plenty of time for that later- we need to get used to this new way of life first.

So I bought an agenda- like an old school- write it out style family ledger- to keep track by the hour of everything we will need to do- I'm keeping it simple- I need things visually laid out for me and if I don't write it down I will most likely forget! I am excited and nervous going into next week- my little guy is going off to Kindergarten and we will most likely be that family who shows up late like four days out of five- I hear that is frowned upon.

Friends it is Friday- of the long weekend- Monday is Labour Day- it is so difficult to believe the Summer has flown by to quickly! Oh and what a Summer it was! In spite of the rain we will be spending as much time outside as possible this weekend- my wish for you dear Friends is that your weekend is filled with the quite peacefulness that comes from a Summer well spent- fullness of the heart and of the mind- much love Friends!

    1. I sure can write more on keeping things simple! Keeping in mind this is just works for our family- I do have loads of ideas and crazy systems that I use to make our life easy. Mostly though we keep things simple by not over scheduling our family- for example I know that September is going to be tricky so we opted out of extra activities such as soccer- plus right now the weather is pretty good so lots for the kids to do outside anyways- come the rainy season we will seek out indoor activities. I think I will write another post this week about keeping life simple- please let me know if there are any specifics you are interested in reading about!

  2. ha yearbook editors are looooosers!
    heh, oh wait. ;(
Anyhow I've been keeping a family calendar for years, I do mine online so I can sync it with Adam's or rather he can sync mine with his, so he knows where he has to be and when. I also use it to menu plan and sometimes for lists. I do wish Google had a task function on their calendar, one that can easily be edited from your phone and that you can move around from day to day. Anyhow, yes a well organized calendar is key. Oh and you can colour code them. It's funny in adulthood I am realizing more and more who I am as a person, who I tried hard not to be in those formative highschool, sucked my soul away years. I am introverted, YAY! And I am rather type A, which lots of type B quirks and flourishes. (like my blue house!) I love me. Oh but we're talking about calendars. YAY calendars!

    1. I think I am a type B who craves to be type A! I love being organized and tidy but really struggle to get there! Menu planning is key- I menu plan and at the same time do our grocery list for the week.

  3. Yes! The old school write-it-down calendar is how we (kind of) stay on top of life. Tried the Google calendar thing, but there is something about the act of writing down our commitments, plans, and meals that seems to work better for us! What kind of calendar are you using?

  5. School already! Where did summer go?!? Yes! We also use an old school style write-it-in-pen type family calendar. I love seeing the week ahead all laid out and the best part that is that we actually USE IT! What kind are you using? I've found one at Costco (yes, Costco) that has super cheesy inspirational quotes and such on it, but the layout is fantastic. It's by a Canadian company, Polestar I think.

  6. We also got our planned from Costco- no inspirational quotes- just a super basic calendar that has like an hour by hour planner- which is great because I can fill in school pick up times and stuff. I need to physically write things down- I am a list maker- it's how I work best! Even in University I needed to not only attend lectures but take tonnes of notes because that is how I learned- it was the writing of the notes not the lecture!
