Grateful

I am finding it so easy to get bogged down by life these days- not in a bad way just in an incredibly busy way- the days of September are whizzing by at increasing speed and I feel like just hitting pause so I can look up and breath a moment. I have taken to waking and rising very early just so I can have some peace and a moment to myself in which to come here to this space- it keeps me sane- with my first and most favourite latte of the day I can just sit and reflect for a minute before jumping into the fray.

In that same vein I often find I have much to complain about with little regard to all the good things in my life I have to be grateful for- I give power to the negative and don't even consider the good. The good things far outweigh the negative or hard things - in an effort to acknowledge all that I am grateful for I am pausing this morning- and this is what I have to share.

I am grateful for:

The amazing weather yesterday- making it a treat to walk to and from school twice in our day- the blue skies and crisp winds made it the perfect fall day- perfect picture taking weather!

My boy had a great day at school- as we left many other classmates yelled out at him "Goodbye!"- we felt part of the school community-like we belong- I am grateful for that moment after some really tough weeks

Time spent with just my Girly yesterday- we explored fountains and public sculptures on our way to a friend's house- I love that the word sculpture is even part of her young vocabulary- I love learning who she is on her own

Finding myself a tribe of wonderful women who are just as crunchy, crazy and fun as I am- friends who like tea and cake and wine- separately or together- spending time with them yesterday

Extra canning jars from said friends- I am ever so grateful for those!

I am so grateful that the Mr. has a job- contract work is a pain - I am so happy he has work right now- I am grateful for that- just not the long hours

Looking forward to more "spare" time spent at a coffee shop on my own today- a full three hours with no Littles is still feeling really foreign and I can be quite emotional about it- but I am enjoying actually sitting and reading or people watching- in the city I never tire of people watching!

My list may be mundane to some but to me these are the things keeping me going this week- it really is the small things like a cup of tea with friends or the sunshine sifting through the window that I have to be grateful for always- sometimes I need to look up and remind myself that. Once power is given to all these good things- the hard and scary things don't seem so bad anymore!

On Aging

It was my birthday this week- I am a product of the late 70's- I have been told I look a lot younger- and not to brag but I was recently carded at the liquor store- to be fair I was wearing a hat and sunglasses so the grey hairs and wrinkles were not visible. My bones though know how old I actually am and my knees in particular creak that little secret out often!

My birth story is pretty incredible- or at least the story of how we got home is- My parents lived in a very remote town- Ocean Falls- and had to take a float plane to a larger city in order to give birth in a hospital- or did they take the mail boat? I can't remember I wasn't there for the first part of that journey- I do know the story of our journey home though as it is pretty epic. I have  been told  the story so often that it is part of my memory- pre- memory if you will- I was born after my mom ate a large dinner and watched Old Yeller- I bet she was crying and that is what started the contractions.

My mom and I stayed with my Grandparents in Westbank B.C. for the next few weeks- after my dad went back up the coast to work- I apparently slept in a dresser drawer in the closet in the back bedroom overlooking the garden- but it was February so everything was hidden under layers of snow. When it came time for the return trip my Grandmother accompanied myself and my Mom onto a boat bound for Norther shores. The exciting bit of the story is that once we were at sea a great storm came up- waves crashing over the haul and sloshing around on the deck- my Grandmother was very ill and my Mom was sure we were going to sink. The crew of the Princess of the North were throwing any extra weight overboard- the plight of the ship's china is always lamented when this story is told.

Spoiler alert- we survived- barely- but the three of us are still here- the ship found a calm bay to ride out the remainder of the storm in and then limped up the coast onto Ocean Falls where we disembarked. My mom does not like boats. I on the other hand feel like I belong on the water- ocean or lake- and perhaps there is something to be said for pre-memory because nothing thrills me more than the rawness of the wind and waves when one is on the water in a storm.

So I am another year older - and yes I am going to talk about myself this entire post- it is my birthday week after all- anyways I am feeling a bit like a ship with loose moorings. Bouncing around a bit and at loose ends- just to use one more sailing analogy- I am adrift. I know I am doing important work here with my Littles and I love it but sometimes I wonder is this it? They are growing fast and while we have loads of fun and learning centred mainly around them sometimes I feel I am getting lost- one day soon they wont need me as much. What do I want to do next?

I look around our home and see piles of laundry and stacks of dirty dishes, there was a time when none of that mattered to me- I didn't see it- now I get overwhelmed by it. Sometimes I feel like a very over educated cleaning woman! I feel like one day when I was 24- I blinked and found myself here. You know that part of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood where Ashley Judd's character runs away and sleeps for like 3 days? I want to do that- just the clean hotel room and the sleeping alone in a giant bed bit- not the pills or the booze- just the sleeping!

Obviously I am just being moody and reflective because I am another year older- more grey hairs and my neck really hurts more often than not- my Chiropractor is a lifesaver. And can someone please tell me why the heck I am always awake at 3 a.m? I am well aware all the little weird things that are happening to my body- aging sucks- I don't know if I am going to be able to do this gracefully- I think it will be kicking and screaming!

OK so pity party aside I am shocked to have even made it this far- years of a pretty adventurous lifestyle have been hard on the old knees- yet still I stand- and on occasion run- I probably shouldn't wake board any more though. I am a lucky lady- I have great kids, a super Mr. by my side and awesome friends- something that was reminded to me in my mail box this week! Really I should be ever so grateful to the universe for serving me up such unconditional love and cuteness- these pictures are from our Valentine's day and it was ever so sweet- even though I cut out more penguins than I care to mention!

I think that wave loving water baby is still inside me there just biding her time- waiting for my brain to say hey wake up and do something for you! I want to get outside this year- I want to sleep under the stars and wake up to a cold fire pit- I want to run- I want to own less stuff- I want to be more true- I want to take a mid -night canoe ride over to Rattlesnake Island and make out with my sweetie! I think for my 37th year on this planet that is an attainable list- I'm not asking for diamonds, cars or even really cute shoes (although if you want to buy me some feel free)!

Friends it is Friday again- thank you for being along for the ride with me today- I sat down at the laptop in a pretty foul mood- I wrote some nasty stuff- I acknowledged it and then let it go- it's not worth the space. I am getting up from my desk a much lighter and happier person- so thanks for listening and being patient! I hope you all have a super free weekend- maybe cross something off your own list- just for fun because we are all worth our own love!

P.S.- thank you to my sister in law for sending some adorable photos of my Mr. when he was wee like our Boy- so cute!

Surviving the Christmas Crazies

Friends it is Friday once again and I for one am looking forward to a weekend spent nesting and readying myself for our Christmas vacation which is only weeks away at this point. Most years we try to get home to our families- we are so lucky to have such a beautiful place to go home to! The logistics of a Christmas spent away can be daunting though- gifts to be finished off, wrapped and passed out before we leave, trying to get visits in with our adopted family here in the city, baking to finish, bags to be packed with every manner of clothing from bathing suits to snow gear- my list is seriously runething over!

I know that I tend to be a bit of a control freak and so with that in mind I am turning towards a handy wellness guide- picked up at my Chiropractor's office. My Chiropractor- Dr Stephanie Bonn of Coco Chiropractic is a lifesaver- she helped me managed to work through both pregnancies almost till the end- easing my sore back and numb hands. Once again on my path to wellness she has become a key player- going to see her every few weeks is becoming a bit of a ritual- a time out for Momma if you will!

Dr. Bonn has put together a comprehensive guide to having a gentle and stress free holiday season- I know I will be following a few of these tips for myself! She suggests making a list of the five most important things that you personally want to accomplish in the month of December - projects like writing Christmas cards, having a Wrapping party and Purging your home in preparation of the incoming gifts. Of course not to be missed out is one essential tip that will be for front in my mind- Balanced Holiday eating- trying to eat well balanced meals through out the week because you know that on the weekend you might over indulge! Uh yup- just maybe!

My Holiday "To Do" List

1) Plenty of family time- it is the most important thing on my list right now- I feel like this is "the year" where our kids still believe in magic and Christmas and they are still sort of little. I just want to soak it all in and spend as much time doing what our kids want- if that is tobogganing then off we go- if it is Lego than in we stay. What ever they want to do I am in!

2) Baking for my friends and family- I know, I know, I am supposed to be watching what I eat- but I love to bake! I am going to take this opportunity to do as much baking for other people as I can!

3) Shopping the Farmer's Market- I know I always talk about the Vancouver Farmer's Market- we do most of our marketing there every weekend- but it is so much fun! The hustle and bustle, the musicians, the coffee and being outside- this is my idea of community and what a better place to spend my Holiday dollars!

4) Visiting- we are going to try so hard to get a visit in with all our friends and family here before we head off for twelve days! We do see each and everyone of our friends often so to me this isn't a guilt item on my list- this is a fun thing to do- lets get together and eat something delicious!

5) Christmas Cards- last but not least my one big "To Do" is to get that stack of cards that is fermenting in the studio out to all our loved ones across the world- how shameful to have a card company and not mail any out!

Thank you Dr. Bonn for getting me started narrowing down my Holiday goals- a lot of things fell by the wayside when I had to think about my top five important goals- which to me indicates they were not all that important to begin with!

So friends this weekend you will find me relaxing with a latte while my girl dances her heart out, followed by a trip to the Farmer's Market - of course cause that's just how I roll! May your mugs be full and your feet be dry!
